TOTAL POWER Could Use a Little More Meat On the Bone

TOTAL POWER by Vince Flynn/Kyle Mills

Vince Flynn came on the scene in 1997 with his first novel TERM LIMITS. It was an action/adventure thriller but did not have the lead character Mitch Rapp. He came along in the next novel and began a life in Flynn’s books that continues to this day. Flynn however died in 2013. The character was taken up by author Kyle Mills in 2015 and he continues to write books featuring Mitch Rapp. His latest is titled TOTAL POWER.

Mitch Rapp is a CIA counter terrorism agent. He is as explosive as the situations in which he finds himself. He is so good at his job that he can pretty much play by his own rules – and he does. If he has to color outside the lines then he will do that in a flash. Sound like anybody you know? I’m thinking of you Jack Bauer.

In his latest story Mitch goes after a group of ISIS terrorists who are being led by a brilliant American engineer. He has discovered a way to turn off all the lights in the United Sates, which means bringing down the power grid. He just needs someone to help him do it, which leads him to ISIS.

The battle of Mitch versus this group is exciting. You never know with Mitch what is going to happen next, and in this story he has quite the powerful enemy. Plus cutting off the power brings the nation to a virtual halt. Mitch is determined to hunt down and kill the person(s) responsible but it doesn’t happen overnight. While he goes on the hunt the body count rises.

There is not a lot of character development in TOTAL POWER. You don’t learn a lot about the inner workings of Rapp’s brain. You don’t learn much about his relationships with others either. It is what it is and he is who he is.

Still for fans of “24” like characters this is the book of the month. It is raw and rowdy, full of murder and mayhem. If that is what you are looking for in your next read then have at it. I prefer a little more depth or what I call meat on the bone.

TOTAL POWER is published by Atria Books. It contains 370 pages and sells for $28.99.
