“Sinbad” (DreamWorks)

DreamWorks Pictures new animated adventure, “Sinbad,” will not go down in the books as a classic but it is fun for the moment. With beautiful animation, a rousing story of adventure and romance, and the vocal talents of some of Hollywood’s brightest stars; the movie has a lot going for it.

The film opens with Sinbad (Brad Pitt) and his crew of pirates attacking a ship captained by Proteus (Joseph Fiennes). Proteus has the “Book of Peace” in his possession and Sinbad thinks he can steal it and hold it for ransom. But Proteus and Sinbad once were friends and now that friendship arises again between them so Sinbad changes his plans.

Eres (Michelle Pfeiffer), the goddess of chaos, also wants the “Book of Peace.” She steals it and makes it look like Sinbad took it. He is sentenced to death for the theft but Proteus offers to take his place if Sinbad does not get the “Book” back.

Sinbad sets sail for the land of chaos to try to get the “Book” back. Underway he discovers he has a stowaway on board, Marina (Catherine Zeta-Jones) who is Proteus’ fiance’. This makes things awkward as Sinbad has always secretly loved Marina.

The scenes of the sea and the landscape surrounding it are impressive. And the ships gliding on the ocean’s surface make for beautiful animation subjects. It is all done with beauty and style, and creates awe in the viewer.

The story itself is only fair. Strangely the voices of Pitt and Zeta-Jones add little to the enjoyment of the movie. Pfeiffer and Fiennes are more animated in their delivery and make their characters more alive.

The movie is rated PG for mild violence, suspense and adult humor.

Young kids may be scared by the sea serpents in the film while slightly older children may get restless because of the pace of the movie. Still for those who stick with it the movie does offer some entertainment.

“Sinbad” won’t win any races for box office king, but it is a see-worthy vehicle.

I scored “Sinbad” an oceanic 6 out of 10.
