“Into The Blue” (MGM/Columbia)
“Into the Blue” is a summer movie that is playing in the fall. It is a film full of beautiful people and a story line that deals with buried treasure and creatures of the deep. It features Jessica Alba in a bikini for the males and Paul Walker in trunks for the ladies. Plus there is some simply stunning underwater photography. What’s not to like!
Jared (Walker) and Sam (Alba) live, love and work in the Bahamas. Jared dreams of finding buried treasure while Sam dreams of leading a loving, blissful life. One day Jared’s old buddy Bryce (Scott Caan) shows up with the lovely Amanda (Ashley Scott) in tow. Bryce is an attorney and has the use of a client’s home and boat.
The foursome go out for some sunning and diving and discover a plane on the bottom of the ocean. It contains a cargo of cocaine. Bryce and Amanda immediately want to bring the “find” up to the surface wile Jared and Sam argue against it. They are more interested in the possible shipwreck they have discovered close by under the sand.
Of course nothing can be simple in the world of movies and soon the mob is threatening the foursome if they don’t get the cocaine up to the surface. It is dive or die even though there are now some unfriendly sharks circling around the wreck.
Alba and Walker make a good romantic team and they both appear perfectly at home in the water. They play their roles of young lovers convincingly and both look great. Caan is energetic and annoying as Bryce while Scott is perfectly suspect as a woman who loves drugs and money in that order.
The movie is rated PG-13 for profanity and violence.
Audiences are not going to be bowled over by anything that happens in “Into the Blue” but they are going to have a good time. The movie keeps its action at a good pace and there are no dull points in the film.
Take a chance on “Into the Blue.” You will find it is better than you expect. At least it was for me.
I scored “Into the Blue” a fishy 6 out of 10.
