Insidious (FilmDistrict)

A Haunted Child

Insidious is a movie with enough chills to keep you on the edge of your seat but not enough gotchas to make you wish you werent there. In that way it is the perfect way to see a scary movie. The film itself is a complex one about paranormal activity and astral projection. You might have to bone up on this stuff in order to get the full impact of the film but even after study some of the elements of the conclusion still dont make a lot of sense.

The story starts with a young couple, Josh and Renai (Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne), and their three children moving into a new home. Soon after they arrive there are some mysterious occurrences. Then their oldest son Dalton (Ty Simkins) falls into a coma of sorts. The doctors cant explain it but Renai blames the house.

So they move to another house but the mysterious happenings still occur and Dalton doesnt get any better. Finally Joshs mother (Barbara Hershey) suggests a friend who investigates paranormal activities. Her name is Elise (Lin Shaye) and she does come and study the house.

Her finding is one that shocks the couple. She says the house isnt haunted but their son is. Now theres a quandary for you, but she has a suggested solution and it is a lulu! By this time your eyes are glued to the screen and the audience is ready to take on any further adventure.

Wilson and Byrne are very good as the anxious parents. Josh seems a little reticent to get involved but there is never any doubt he loves his wife and children. Byrne is fierce as Renai, a woman determined to protect her children at any cost.

Movies such of these are just scary enough and delight the audience with fluttery creatures and things that go bump in the night. There is anticipation for what is going to happen next almost from the first frame of the film.

Director James Wan has a sure grasp of his subject matter and he has hired very good actors to bring the story to life. The photography in the film is appropriately murky and the ghostly figures well created.

The movie is rated PG-13 for violence and profanity.

If you like scary movies then this is one to put on your must see list. Not everything that happens in the movie makes sense but enough does to keep most audience members entertained and satisfied.

I scored Insidious a possessed 6 out of 10.
