“A Guy Thing” (MGM)
“A Guy Thing” is another so-so comedy, one of those movies released in January that will fade quickly and head straight for the video store. The three stars who inhabit the film all have been better in other movies. Still Julia Stiles, Jason Lee and Selma Blair are not without their charms in this film. They just aren’t charming enough to overcome a tired script and lackluster direction.
In the “here we go again” plot, Paul (Lee) is engaged to Karen (Blair). On the night of his bachelor party he gets smashed and ends up in the morning with a girl named Becky (Stiles) by his side. She assures him that nothing happened between them, but he still doesn’t want Karen finding out about it.
Things get even more complicated when Paul discovers that Becky is Karen’s cousin. How wild and unlikely is that! And then of course he is thrown with her in several situations and any fool can see that she is the girl for him. But what about Karen
The novel thing about this movie is that the older generation is excellently cast in this film. James Brolin and Diana Scarwid play Karen’s parents while Julie Hagerty plays Paul’s mom. All three of these “senior” actors know their way around a scene, comedic or otherwise.
The movie is rated PG-13 for profanity and crude humor (is there any other kind these days)
The movie is predictable from start to finish. The only surprises are in the talents of the cast, young and old. If they had a script worthy of their talents then this might be a movie to rush out and see. As is, just wait for the video.
I scored “A Guy Thing” a masculine 4 out of 10.
