“Indivisible” (Pure Flix)

“Indivisible” is a film based on the story of Army Chaplain Darren Turner and his wife Heather. Justin Bruening and Sarah Drew play the real life couple and this casting makes this movie seem like a Grey’s Anatomy” spin-off. Bruening was Matthew the EMT guy and Drew played Dr. April Kepner. Their characters were married in the final show of last season and departed to do some type of mission work. To add even more “Grey’s Anatomy” relativity, Jason George who plays Miranda’s husband on “GA” is also in the cast. This familiarity wth the actors makes this movie easy to access mentally and emotionally as they are playing characters akin to the ones we know them for playing.

The basic plot of this faith based film is the story of the Turner family. He is deployed to Iraq during the early 2000’s, which means he must leave his wife behind to care for and raise their three children. They try to keep the lines of communication between them open but Darren is in a foreign land feeling responsible for the spiritual well-being of the members of his unit. The daily tension of being in a war zone drags him down but he does not want to burden Heather with his problems.

Neither Darren nor Heather loses faith in God but they do suffer from a lack of belief in each other. They drift apart and it looks like their marriage will be another victim of the war. This is an important message from the movie, that even Christians can lose their way in relationships.

All of the actors are good in their roles with Skye P Marshall being particularly luminous as Darren’s assistant in Iraq. Her smile lights up the screen whenever it flashes across her face. Tia Mowry-Hardrick also has some good moments as the wife of Jason George’s character.

“Indivisible” is an entertaining movie in its own right. It has a story that reaches out to the audience and impacts them with its truth. The Christian message, which is pervasive, is only a facet of the couple’s story. It is an important part but only an element of the overall film.

The movie is rated PG-13 for violence and war sequences.

Christians should embrace this film as it falls into the teachings they have accepted. Non believers should also enjoy it for its love story and positive values. It is not an overly preachy film but rather a film that represents good story telling;

I scored “Indivisible” a united 7 out of 10.
