“Waist Deep” (Rogue Films)
Tyrese Gibson and Meagan Good star in the new action thriller “Waist Deep.” The film concerns the kidnapping of a young boy and his father’s efforts to get him back. It is a trite plot but somehow the makers of this film are able to give it a little something extra and this provides more entertainment in the movie than you would expect.
Gibson plays O2, an ex-con who is trying to build a better life with his young son (H Hunter Hall). As he and his son are driving home one day they are carjacked. O2’s son is asleep in the backseat and is taken. O2 realizes that his son was taken on purpose when he meets a young woman who helped set the whole thing up. This woman, Coco (Good), is caught up in a bad life in LA and O2 promises if she will help him get his son back he will help her get out of town.
It takes a lot of effort to find out who has his son and when he does it takes even more effort, and a lot of money, to get him back. Meanwhile O2 has to battle the kidnappers as well as the police. This is where the reality of the movie goes out the window and the action takes over.
Gibson and Good make a believable “Bonnie and Clyde” type pair. He is a man desperate to get his son back, and she is a woman used to thinking only of herself. As the movie progresses both of these characters evolve into better people.
Larenz Tate has a supporting role as O2’s cousin. He also joins in the effort to find O2’s son. The Game is seen as Meat, the evil man who has kidnapped the boy. In the end it comes down to a contest between O2 and the Meat, with the fate of O2, his son and Coco waiting in the balance.
The movie is rated R for violence and profanity.
As action movies go this is not a bad film. It isn’t great but it is moderately entertaining. Gibson and Good make it better than you ever thought it would be. One thing for sure, you won’t be bored.
I scored “Waist Deep” a knee high 5 out of 10.
