The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 (Warner Brothers)

Caught Up In the Sequel Slump

In 2005 The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants was released. It starred the well known actresses Amber Joan of Arcadia Tamblyn and Alexis Gilmore Girls Bledel. It also featured the lesser known America Ferrera and Blake Lively. Now we have The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 and the awareness of the actresses has been turned upside down. Ferrera is riding high on the popularity of Ugly Betty and Lively is hot as the star of Gossip Girl.

The sequel to the movie based on Ann Brashares novel lets each actress have her time in the sun or spotlight. In the movie the four girls are planning their summers after their first year of college. Tibby (Tamblyn) is going to stay in New York and work. Lena (Bledel) is going to art school. Carmen is going to work in a form of summer stock while Bridget is going on an archaeological dig.

As the movie plays out each girl has a mild summer drama enter her life and it all gets resolved by the end when they all go to Greece. There is nothing too dramatic in the film, nothing too romantic, or even anything too funny. It is all interesting to a point but that is because the actresses are fun to watch. That is certainly why watching Bridget on a dig is interesting at all.

The least interesting of the actresses is Bledel. She is pretty blah as Lena. And even though she has the most romantic moments in the film, they come off as silly and immature. Lena looks fifteen and acts twelve. Lucy Hale who plays Lenas younger sister Effie is much more interesting in the movie, and she has a very small part.

Blythe Danner makes an appearance as Bridgets grandmother and shows these young actresses what acting is all about. Ernie Lively, who is Blakes real life father, appears as Bridgets father but the less said about that the better.

The movie is rated PG-13 for mildly suggestive sex scenes.

Less is made this time out of the magic in the jeans the girls share. The pants travel back and forth but nothing very exciting happens when they do. Plus the scenes where the girls are all together are filled with bickering, and thats not fun.

It seems The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 suffers from sequel-itus. It probably sounded like a good idea to get the girls back together but someone forgot to bring along a plot. What we get are just some vignettes about girls on their own a sort of Sex and the City junior grade.

I scored The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 a worn 5 out of 10.
