Sex and the City 2 (New Line Cinema)
A Little Older But Not Any Wiser
Sex and the City 2 brings audiences up to date on the lives of Miranda, Samantha, Charlotte and Carrie. Two years have passed since the setting of the last film and these women have gotten only a little bit older and not an iota wiser. The movie will appeal to those who love all things SATC but for those not as devoted the movie will only be so-so.
SATC2 presents a view of four women who are stylish and attractive but there isnt a beauty in the bunch. The closest to beauty is Charlotte (Kristin Davis). Samantha (Kim Cattrall) is now so botoxed she looks artificial while Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) is fairly plain. And then there is Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker). She is the queen of style but feature wise she is no beauty in any sense of the word.
The movie takes a bit of a plot and stretches it over two and a half hours. It starts with a wedding, a gay wedding as it is referred to over and over. This is a union between Carries best friend Stanford (Willie Garson) and Charlottes best friend Anthony (Mario Cantone). This affair, complete with Liza Minnelli as the minister, goes on forever.
A short while later the four women take off for Abu Dhabi courtesy of Samantha. She is doing publicity work for a sheik and gets her friends invited along. This comes at a good time as Miranda has quit her job and is feeling worthless and Charlottes two children are driving her to distraction. Carrie thinks she and Big (Chris Noth) are becoming an old married couple.
The trip takes up the rest of the movie. While in this foreign land Carrie goes for a camel ride with her shoulders bared. What about sunburn you might ask No problem for our Carrie. We also see Samantha scandalize the locals with her wanton ways but she never seems aware she is doing anything wrong, or in the least bit rude and crude.
It is understandable why certain people will like this movie. Many have sunk a lot of time and energy into getting to know these characters through the TV series and the first film. This movie gives them some follow up. Plus there is fashion and some humor.
For the not so devoted the movie is just an okay look at how rich New Yorkers live. The four women seem to have endless wardrobes and money to burn. For them to whine about anything seems petty, but this is a fantasy world in which they live.
The movie is rated R for profanity, nudity and sexual situations.
It seems the women in this film are the same exact characters they played in the first one. They havent grown at all. Miranda is still the worrier, Charlotte is still the whiner, Samantha is still the sex obsessed cougar, and Carrie is still the semi-shallow fashion plate. There has been no growth and that makes the movie just a look at them treading water.
The ladies of Sex and the City 2 are getting a little older with each film that is made. It would be nice if they were also getting a little wiser.
I scored Sex and the City 2 a blinging 5 out of 10.
