Prom (Walt Disney Pictures)

Disney-esque

The new movie Prom is a Disney-esque version of the yearly ritual that takes place across our country. This movie keeps everything sanitized so that it will be appropriate for tweens, and can feed their romanticized view of the world. This is a place where drugs, alcohol and sex dont exist and going to the prom means being with your biggest crush on a magical night. It may not be a stark, accurate picture but it is one that is nice to have.

The film primarily focuses on Nova Prescott (Aimee Teegarden) who is the popular girl in the senior class who is putting it all together. She is in charge of getting the decorations and creating the magic for the night. When the decorations burn up in a fire, Nova is desperate for help in getting things going again. The Principal (Jere Burns) assigns school bad boy Jesse Richter (Thomas McDonell) to help her out.

So now we have the school good girl being paired with the school bad boy. You know they are going to fall in love, and how this happens makes up the plot of the movie. Meanwhile you get a second story involving a senior named Tyler (DeVaughn Nixon), a sophomore girl named Simone (Danielle Campbell) and a boy named Lucas (Nolan Sotillo).

Tyler is a player but he has a steady girlfriend named Jordan (Kylie Bunbury). He is flirting with Simone who is also being pursued by her classmate Lucas. Lucas has never had a girlfriend before and is head over heels for Simone. Will she break his heart by going off with Tyler, or will she see the purity of his love for her

The acting in this movie is not the strongest but Teegarden and McDonell are convincing in their roles. Still the person you will remember from the movie is Campbell, and not just for her acting talent. She looks like a really pretty Katie Holmes and she manages to catch the audiences eyes every time she is on screen.

The movie is rated PG for mild violence and language.

Prom is a movie all parents can feel comfortable in letting their children see. It is romantic and harmless; not realistic in the sense that you are exposed to any negative side of Prom night. These Disney movies serve a purpose and this one is as Disney-esque as it gets.

So let your kids see this show about how Prom is supposed to be, in a world where sex, drugs and alcohol do not exist. It may not be realistic but it is a fun place to visit.

I scored Prom a dancing 6 out of 10.
