“London Fields” (GVN Releasing)
“London Fields” is a movie that is a little strange and even more so a little quirky. Now sometimes that is a good thing and sometimes it is not. In this instance it is not a good thing but it is not a totally bad thing either. There is possibly an audience out there who will see this wild and crazy film as a form of entertainment. I am not in that group but that does not mean such a group does not exist.
The film concerns a woman named Nicola (Amber Heard) who can foresee her own death. She knows when it will occur and she knows who probably will commit the act. It is one of three people she met in a bar. There is the writer named Samson Young (Billy Bob Thornton), the married man named Guy Clinch (Theo James), and the dart thrower named Keith Talent (Jim Sturgess).
Nicola is a bit of an enigma throughout the movie and she comports herself in different ways around these three men. Each man falls a little in love with her with Guy being the man willing to risk it all for her. In truth each has a reason for wanting her dead.
The movie has a scorecard of weird and not so weird things that are required. Amber Heard must be gorgeous and seductive. Check. Jim Sturgess must present a character who is bouncing off the walls. Check. Billy Bob Thornton must be seen having a bad wig day. Check. Jason Isaacs must have no more than a cameo role in the film. Check. Same for Cara Delevingne. Check. Johnny Depp must check in from time to time to deliver another role that is a combination of Sweeney Todd and the Mad Hatter. Check. Now if any or all of this appeals to you, you have a chance of enjoying the movie.
It is hard to determine when this film was made because at the end of their marriage Heard and Depp could not abide being in the same room let alone the same movie. So let’s assume it was filmed a few years ago.
The film is rated R for nudity, violence and profanity.
“London Fields” is a complete mess when it comes to making sense. It does involve several love affairs and a championship darts tournament. Somewhere in the writer’s mind there is a link between all that but I couldn’t find it on the screen .
Watch “London Fields” at your own risk. It is confusing and antagonizing. But it is never out and out dull.
I scored “London Fields”” a planted 4 out of 10.
