Jumping The Broom (TriStar Pictures)

All of the Elements Blend

Jumping the Broom is a movie based on a book by T. D. Jakes, who is a minister as well as an author. Therefore the film has some religious elements woven through it. There is also romance, comedy and drama. None of these elements fight against each other but rather cohese in a nice blend.

The basic premise of the film is the upcoming wedding of two nice, attractive young people. Sabrina Watson (Paula Patton) is the bride to be. She comes from a wealthy family who resides on Marthas Vineyard Island. Jason Taylor (Laz Alonso) is the groom to be and he comes from a middle class family. His father is dead and his mother (Loretta Devine) is very protective of him.

When the two families meet it is a clash of cultures. The well to do Watsons have a difficult time blending with the more down to earth Taylors. Jason finds himself being pulled in two directions, and realizes he cant please both his bride and his mother. He has to make a choice.

Loretta Devine is absolutely divine as Pam Taylor. She gives a carefully shaded performance which presents this woman as one who is loving but also possessive. She is not a perfect woman in many ways but she does have a loving heart.

Bassett is equally good as Claudine, a proper and somewhat rigid woman. As the movie progresses Bassett lets the audience look inside her soul and see the woman she keeps hidden. It is a layered performance that keeps finding new facets as it emerges.

Among the supporting players Mike Epps is outstanding comedically as Jasons uncle Willie Earl. Tasha Smith has some great moments as Pams best friend Shonda. Romeo has fun playing an aggressive young man named Sebastian who pursues Shonda. And Julie Bowen makes the most of her screen time as the clueless wedding planner.

The movie is rated PG-13 for mild profanity and adult situations.

A strong cast and a strong story make this a truly enjoyable summer film. The fact it includes comedy, romance and drama in a way that is all blended together gives it extra points. Director Salim Akil gets credit for keeping the balance right.

If you want to see a movie that will put a smile on your face and give a tug to your heart, opt for Jumping the Broom. It is one that will make you laugh and make you cry and when was the last time that happened

I scored Jumping the Broom a hopping 7 out of 10.
