This weekend presents us with a variety of movies from which to choose. If you like to be scared you can opt for “Don’t Breathe”; if you like a look at Wall Street then you can choose “Equity”; if you want a simple love story you can check out “Southside With You”; or if you have a yen for a fast-paced adventure that includes a high body count you should watch “Mechanic: Resurrection”. It is not often you get such a gamut of entertainment in one weekend.
“Don’t Breathe” is a movie characterized by many as a horror film – but it isn’t. It is a SUSPENSE film, a movie of almost never ending suspense. The story has three young people living in Detroit who decide to rob a blind war veteran who they hear has a stash of money in his home. Once inside the house they become trapped and the blind man is after them. Did I mention this guy has war skills aplenty? The movie has about five endings so keep telling yourself it isn’t over till it is over. Plus even though there is no one you are rooting for in this story, the ending is completely satisfactory.
If like me you didn’t understand the business nuances in “The Wolf of Wall Street” and you didn’t have a clue as to what “The Big Short” was all about, do I have a movie for you. That is if you want to see a movie about Wall Street and understand what is occurring on screen. Somehow “Equity” tells a story all about IPO’s and financial planners but is still followable. It also has an “All About Eve” (look it up) subplot which is really interesting. Anna Gunn is the star and she is perfect as the Wall Street woman who wants to break that glass ceiling big time.
If you are not a fan of the Obamas then don’t waste your time on “Southside With You.” If you are a fan of the President and his wife you might enjoy this look at their first date. Yes, that is what the entire movie is about – their first date. When it is over the movie is over, and this has caused some complaints from people who expected a longer story. “It was half a movie” was the most common gripe I heard from the audience I was with. Even so, Parker Sawyers is amazingly like Barak Obama in looks and mannerisms. The tiniest inflections in his voice are spot on. Tika Sumpter as Michelle is not as good.
If you like action then the movie you want to see is “Mechanic: Resurrection” which stars Jason Statham. Once again playing the character Charles Bronson originated, Statham is little talk and all action. In this movie he has to kill three people (including a character played by Tommy Lee Jones) in order to rescue a damsel in distress (Jessica Alba). The violence in this movie is so repetitive it gets boring, but every time Alba is on view the movie perks up. One question though, why is TommY Lee Jones showing up in every other movie made by Hollywood lately?
Happy moviegoing!
