Did You Hear About the Morgans (Sony Pictures)

A TV Movie Disguised As a Big Screen One

Although the new film Did You Hear Bout the Morgans has Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker as its stars, the movie is basically a TV movie dressed up like a big screen one. That could be a good thing or a bad thing based on how much your tickets cost and how much the concessions set you back. Odds are you are not going to feel like you got the most bang for your buck with this flick.

Paul and Meryl Morgan (Grant and Parker) are separated because of his infidelity. Paul desperately wants them to get back together but he is having a hard time winning Meryl over. He asks her out on a date and while they are out they witness a murder. This results in them being placed in the Witness Protection Program in Wyoming.

In Wyoming they are under the care of Sheriff Clay Wheeler and his wife Emma (Sam Elliott and Mary Steenburgen). They live with them and learn lessons about rural living. Since they are both hard core New Yorkers this is a hard thing for them to do.

The movie is pretty predictable as it moves from point A to point B to point C. So are Paul and Meryl. Still the chemistry between Grant and Parker is good and there are some funny moments in the film just not enough. The scenery is also nice.

Elizabeth Moss and Jason Liebman are added fun as the Morgans personal assistants. Plus Elliott and Steenburgen are a modern day western couple who are holding on to the old traditions.

You keep hoping for one unpredictable moment to arrive but it never does. Everything plays out just as you suspect it would, and the funniest scenes in the movie have already been seen in the trailer.

The film is rated PG-13 for profanity and mild violence.

With the economy being what it is and ticket prices being what they are it might be best to just wait for the DVD. It will be in your local store before you know it. Then you can sit in the comfort of your own home and enjoy the mildly amusing treasures this film offers.

I scored Did You Hear About the Morgans a deaf 5 out of 10.
