College (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer)
Flunks
At this time when we are seeing deaths related to binge drinking, why shouldnt Hollywood make a movie about binge drinking In this day of STDs and AIDs, why shouldnt Hollywood make a movie about teen sexual antics Theres no need to be responsible, right If it was good enough for Animal House then it is good enough for College seems to be the logic. But maybe we didnt know as much about these negatives when that film was made as we do now.
College focuses on three teens Kevin (Drake Bell), Carter (Andrew Caldwell) and Morris (Kevin Covais). Kevin is the average guy, Carter is the party guy, and Morris is the nerdy guy. After Kevins girl drops him because he isnt exciting enough, the three decide to visit a college that Kevin and Morris hope to attend in the fall. They are supposed to stay in the dorm but after a mix-up they end up bunking in a fraternity house where the brothers treat them like pledges.
The guys meet some college girls and pretend to be college guys. They go to party after party and end up drunk, dirty and disgusted with themselves. Maybe that is the moral of the film but it surely doesnt hit home.
Drake Bell was on the hit TV series Josh and Drake where he played clean cut to the extreme. In this film he is basically the good guy but one who parties too much. Caldwell is a John Belushi wannabe. He is crude and obnoxious and seriously overweight.
Covais is the best part of the movie. This guy who was nicknamed Chicken Little when he competed on American Idol is a natural on screen. He falls naturally into his role and never breaks character. It is a good beginning for his acting career. Too bad it is in such a bad movie that very few people will see.
The movie is rated R for profanity, violence and nudity.
In this day and age a movie like College is totally irresponsible. It shows all the fun things that can happen in college without any of the consequences. For that reason alone this movie should be avoided. But if you do go, look for Kevin Covais. He is the best part of the film.
I scored College a flunked out 3 out of 10.
