“Beautifully Broken” (ArtAffects)

“Beautifully Broken” is a faith based film that tells the story of three families connected in miraculous ways. That it is based on true events makes its impact that much larger. This is a film for today’s audiences as it deals with war and hate, love and hope. It shows how the impossible can become the possible if there is enough love to bring hope.

William Mwizerwa (Benjamin A Onyango) lives with his wife and daughter in Rwanda. He has a great job ands life is good, well as good as it can be in a country torn by civil war. Another man lives with his wife and daughter in another part of Rwanda. His name is Mugenzi (Bonko Khoza) and he is forced into joining the rebels as they fight for the country. He and William’s paths cross when William and his family are fleeing the country.

Meanwhile there is a man named Randy (Scott William Winters) who lives with his wife and daughter in Nashville. He and his family attend a church led by Pastor Henry (Michael W Smith). It is at this church that William eventually lands up when he arrives in America with hopes of bringing his family over later. He is supported in all ways by the church and after a while William’s wife and daughter are able to join him.

Meanwhile Randy’s daughter Andrea (Emily Hahn) becomes pen pals with a girl named Umuhoza (Ditebogo Ledwaba). She is the daughter of Mugenzi. Andrea has had something traumatic happen to her and cannot find peace with it. She becomes rebellious and sullen. Randy and his wife are at their wits end trying to understand her.

The movie weaves these three stories together and keeps the audience on edge with all of the trials and tribulations they face . It seems almost impossible that this story could be true but the ads say it is based on fact and the “what happened next” statements at the end of the film show pictures of the real people portrayed in the film.

This is a movie not meant to be judged on the acting skills presented but rather on the emotional impact of the story. The actors performances range from bad to adequate with Onyango being the best of the bunch.

The film is rated PG-13 for violence.

This faith based film should score well with the church crowds. If they can draw them into movie theaters then they will be entertained and inspired. It really is a beautiful story of hope and faith.

I scored “Beautifully Broken” a healed 7 out of 10.
