“Meadowlands” (SHOWTIME)
SHOWTIME introduces a new series to us this summer. It is titled “Meadowlands” and it is a British production. The show concerns a family placed in a witness protection program. The town where they are relocated is called Meadowlands. The twist is that everyone in the town is in the witness protection program and that means they all have something to hide.
The star of this show is David Morrissey. You have seen him before in such movies as “Basic Instinct 2” and “Derailed.” He plays Danny Brogran, a man who has a past but is trying to hold on to his present. He is very protective of his wife, son and daughter. He will even kill to keep them safe.
Lucy Cohu plays Evelyn Brogran, Danny’s wife. She has not yet warmed to the idea of staying in Meadowlands indefinitely. Her life is also complicated by the fact she finds herself attracted to Dr. David York (Tristan Gemmill) and that upsets her. Evelyn wants very much to be a good wife and mother, and she too is fiercely protective of her family.
Felicity Jones and Harry Treadaway play the Brogan’s two children Zoe and Mark. Zoe indulges in some flirting that could place her in harm’s way. Mark on the other hand is semi autistic and has other personality problems.
In the first few episodes of the show it seems “Meadowlands” is a very claustrophobic place. It takes a while to get to know who is who and what is what and until that all becomes second nature the show will be difficult to understand. The question is – will audiences be patient enough to learn about them all.
The acting on the show is first rate but the scripts tend to drag out plot points. Americans tend to want fast paced series while the British are more patient. “Meadowlands” is definitely for the patient.
“Meadowlands” is an eight-part series which airs Sundays at 10PM on SHOWTIME. |
