“The Hurricane Heist” (Entertainment Studios)

Sometimes I just want to see a movie that is all action. I don’t care who the stars are as long as there are car chases and special effects. It is the way I felt when I watched the first “Fast and Furious” movies, and in some ways it was how I felt when I watched “Die Hard.” Yes I know Bruce Willis was the star but he wasn’t that well known at the time. “The Hurricane Heist” also pretty much fills the bill. It has mostly unknown actors but it has enough of a “rush” to it to meet the needs of any adrenalin junkie.

“The Hurricane Heist” focuses on the brothers Rutledge, Will and Breeze (Tony Kebbell and Ryan Kwanten). They are first shown as children caught up in a hurricane in Gulfport, Alabama in 1992. The the film flash forwards to the present where another hurricane is bearing down on Gulfport. Will and Breeze are still citizens of that community. Will is a meteorologist while Breeze works in equipment repair.

One of Gulfport’s claims to fame is a United States Treasury facility located there. Just as the hurricane is about to hit the town a huge truck arrives carrying a load of cash that is scheduled to be destroyed. Federal officers Casey and Perkins (Maggie Grace and Ralph Ineson) are in charge of this transfer and the money is scheduled to be shredded.

Of course nothing about this routine operation goes right as there are bad guys waiting for the money to arrive so they can steal it during the hurricane. During a series of exciting circumstances Casey and the two brothers end up being the good guys who fight to overcome the nefarious plot. Watching them wage battle during a lollapalooza of a hurricane is what gives the movie its kicks.

I was only vaguely aware of Kebbell and Kwanten, but I did know Maggie Grace. I discovered her years ago on “Lost” and then rediscovered her when she played Liam Neesom’s daughter in “Taken,” She is the bright spot in this film where she plays a take no prisoners lawman who is mentally and physically up for the job.

Humor also plays a big role in this film. Some of it is intentional and some just occurs on its own. What is lacking in the movie is logic. Some of the situations and circumstances which arise just can not be explained logically. To overcome that lack, you just have to go with the flow and not worry about it.

The movie is rated PG-13 for violence and profanity.

“The Hurricane Heist” is directed by Rob Cohen of “Fast and Furious” fame. It has excitement galore. In some movies that is enough, and for me “The Hurricane Heist” fits into that category.

I scored “The Hurricane Heist” a stolen 6 out of 10.
